Magothy River’s Secrets Unraveled in Second Edition

Lovers of the Magothy River have spoken. By popular demand, author Marianne Taylor and publisher Bay Media, Inc. have released a second edition of My River Speaks.

Local writer Marianne Taylor, moved by a passion for uncovering the layers of history and love of the Magothy River, carefully unravels its secrets in My River Speaks. The second edition contains an elaborate index, helpful for research purposes.

With deft precision and perspective, Taylor chronicles the history of the Magothy River, once called "the forgotten River" of the Chesapeake. Through private diaries and first hand historical accounts, the Magothy sparkles with remembrances of its prime. From evocations of the Revolutionary War, to its oral histories of the Civil War, My River Speaks documents Magothy River history against the backdrop of the early settlement of the waters on the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay.

Once again, lumber rams and pungees ply the Magothy’s waters, the original farms and summer camps spring to life. Tracing the people of the river from pre-history through today, the author provides many maps which identify historical grist and lumber mills, as well as vegetable and tobacco landings and old ferry routes. Archival photographs capture life along small coves and creeks. The fine illustrations by local artist Joan Machinchick, of Lake Claire Design Studio, depict flora, fauna, antique tools and period scenes.

Taylor emphasizes that this small tributary of the Bay is a treasure of natural resources, which are quickly disappearing. She names its endangered species, and elaborates upon its unique programs to combat encroaching pollution.

Writes Taylor, "The history of the river is the history of all rivers…. just as the care of one river makes it’s mark on all the rivers of the Chesapeake Bay."

My River Speaks is published by Bay Media, Inc. and is available online, at major bookstores and outlets in the Baltimore-Annapolis area. For more information Call 410-647-8402.
